WASHINGTON, Dec. 22 (UPI) -- An official in U.S. President George W. Bush's administration is tapped to be the cybersecurity coordinator for President Obama, an official said. The White House official said Howard A. Schmidt would be named Obama's choice to coordinate the government's strategy for protecting computer systems Tuesday, The Washington Post reported.
Schmidt will oversee cybersecurity policy across the federal government against a backdrop of a Pentagon initiative to start a new cyber unit and a Homeland Security Department of Homeland Security effort to improve protection of civilian networks.
In May, Obama pledged to "personally select" a cyber adviser, declaring the nation's computer networks a "strategic national asset," the Post said.
Schmidt was special adviser for cyberspace security from 2001-2003 and helped usher in the National Strategy to Secure Cyberspace, officials said. He now is president of the Information Security Forum, a non-profit group of corporations and public sector organizations focused on cybersecurity issues
