In a presentation that was sponsored by the Center for Democracy and Technology and TechNews, Federal CTO Chopra, meet in Silicon Valley to discuss his plans for spurring innovation in the IT market. Before his appointment as CTO, Chopra was the Virginia Technology Secretary since 2006, and the managing director for the Advisory Board Co. In his new role, he’ll be charged with modernizing the delivery of services of the government.
According to the Wall Street Journal, Silicon Valley executives appeared genuinely excited about Chopra’s appointment. Phil Bond, TechAmerica President, notes, “He has championed policies that enable better government and a stronger economy through use of technology.” Robert Holleyman, called Chopra, “a superb choice.”
However, despite the recent appointment, many people in the IT sector wonder, how will our federal CTO help the IT industry?” During the August 4 presentation, Chopra discussed plans to help the IT industry, such as forging partnerships with universities and soliciting the technology sectors’ input through the Defense Solutions Program.
Customer Experience Design Workshops
During Chopra’s presentation, he encouraged universities to start placing a stronger emphasis on bridging the gap between business and technology by creating “customer experience design workshops.” In addition, Chopra plans on launching these programs at the federal government level.
Spurring Technology Innovation
Chopra would also like to focus on partnering with technology companies to communicate the innovative support that is currently available, such as the Department of Defense’s Defense Solutions Program. This program is dedicated to collecting IT solutions, such as technology concepts, prototypes and services that will advance the military’s missions.
Development Strategies
According to the Wall Street Journal, the new CTO will focus on developing “national strategies for using advanced technologies to transform our economy and our society, such as fostering private sector innovation, reducing administrative costs and medical errors using health IT, and using technology to change the way teachers teach and students learn.” These development strategies are designed to help companies expand and prosper.
In addition, Chopra is planning on expanding technology through broadband access, and plans to spend 7.3 billion dollars on a broadband build-out, which could mean large contracts for companies who focus on these services.
With so many plans in the works, technology companies are likely to see positive changes in the future. Understanding how these changes will affect your IT company will help drive future success.
