Despite a bleak year of job losses, the technology sector is finally making a comeback. According to TechWorld, the IT job market has added 7,400 positions in July 2009 alone. This is great news as the Department of Labor statistics shows the US economy cutting 247,000 jobs in the month of July. But, many job seekers are looking to expand their job search outside of traditional technology firms.
Jobs in Non-Technology Sectors
Tapping into job opportunities outside of traditional tech firms, can allow you to broaden your experience, and find unadvertised positions. But, before expanding your job search, here are a few industries to check out.
Electrical companies. Check with your local utility companies, which routinely post technology related jobs.
Financial institutions. Web designers, help desk support, and systems administration are common needs for banks, credit unions and other credit companies.
Medical providers. Large hospitals have tech teams to support their daily operations. Also, check out regional medical groups, which run several offices in your area.
Insurance Companies. These companies have complicated networks and need tech support in a variety of areas, from database administration, to security to web design.
Online Information Providers. Large online companies, like WebMD, serves information seekers, and require a large tech team to support the operations and expansion of their website. They often advertise for database developers, graphical interface designers, systems administrators and systems engineers.
Green companies. Green companies are growing their staff faster than ever, and need tech professionals to get their websites up, manage technology systems, and keep business operations up and running. Check out green publishing companies and special interest groups, which routinely hire tech professionals.
Jobs that are Growing
If you’re thinking about changing your career path, or just launched your technology career, check out tech jobs that are trending upward. According to the Department of Labor, computer system designers added an additional 7,900 jobs in July, 2009. Also, 900 jobs were added in the management and consulting segment. However, computer data processing and hosting showed job losses.
Although the tech industry has faced hardship in the past, the industry is showing a recovery trend. Those looking for technology jobs have more options available then working for traditional technology firms.
