THE POSITION: Amongst Silicon Valley companies known for being analytical, Netflix stands out as a particularly data-driven company. Within this culture, the Business Intelligence (BI) group is responsible for getting timely, accurate, and relevant data into the hands of decision-makers. The decisions facilitated by BI's data have a significant impact on the company's strategy and profitability.
As a member of the BI team, the Business Intelligence Developer will combine good overall business knowledge and technical skills with keen analytical skills to produce results.
Communication and analytical skills are fundamental requirements for success in this role. Knowledge of business intelligence tools and architecture is also highly important. A SQL expert with experience developing reports with MicroStrategy or Business Objects in a marketing department will thrive in this role.
THE ROLE
The Business Intelligence Developer will be aligned with the marketing business team and be responsible for providing any or all of the following functions:
- Provide expert advice in the usage and interpretation of data for the assigned business area. - Provide decision-support to analysts, managers and executives by creating reports, running queries, and performing advanced analytics such as statistical analysis and data mining. - Play a key role in defining analytic metrics which drive the business forward. - Design data structures optimized for MicroStrategy-style multi-pass queries. - Define business rules and transformations for data coming from source systems into the data warehouse. - Identify data quality issues and their root causes. Propose fixes and design data audits to ensure the problem doesn't occur again. - Lead small project-teams to deploy new reporting functionality within the enterprise data warehouse.
Successful execution of these tasks includes the following activities: - Delivering clear written and oral communication with analyst teams, IT, and internal customer teams. - Actively question and challenge customers to understand their requirements and reach optimal requirements. - Documenting communication of projects and time allocations. - Successfully implementing process improvements impacting own work and work of others. - Negotiate customer priorities and workload with many internal customers and team members. - Interact with cross-functional teams to deliver projects within committed time frames.
Qualifications The successful candidate will have a minimum of 5 years experience working as an analyst in a data-driven environment, and will also have a strong background designing and implementing analytics systems, ideally within the marketing team of a consumer-facing business.
Preferred Qualifications - Strong quantitative and statistical skills - Ability to explain technical concepts to non-technical associates and vice-versa is a must - Previous experience with cross-channel marketing analytics and major marketing metrics: conversion, retention, SAC, LTV - Track record of uncovering consumer behaviors and motivations that result in breakthrough business insights - Energetic, enthusiastic, detail-oriented, and passionate about producing high-quality analytics deliverables - Responsive, team-oriented personal style for effectiveness with internal clients and colleagues - Excellent SQL skills are required and will be tested during the interview - Extensive interaction with computer systems and analytical tools supporting data analysis (MicroStrategy, native SQL). - BA required; degree in mathematics / quantitative area of study preferred
