Job Description: This position is responsible for the engineering of the global IT infrastructure for Brocade. This spans all aspects of the IT infrastructure: data centers, converged data and multimedia networks, storage, servers, endpoints, systems management, key infrastructure applications (e.g., directory services, DNS, FTP), Cloud and similar services (XaaS).
Key responsibilities of this position include:
- leading a high-performance engineering team, consisting of ~ 17 local and distributed staff (employees and contractors), based on focused staff development and mentorship; - establishing and maintaining a strategic infrastructure roadmap; - specifying and coordinating a suitable division of responsibilities between the Engineering and the Operations teams; - ensuring disciplined adherence to engineering processes and management through metrics; - managing internal and external relationships effectively; - managing successfully to standard project dimensions (resources, time, scope, quality); - delivering tangible business value in terms of cost management, enhanced infrastructure agility and performance, improved / differentiating user and functional capabilities.
This is a high-profile position within the IT department and would suit an individual with strong leadership and management skills as well as substantial vision, energy, drive, technical breadth and depth, discipline, and results-orientation. Qualifications/Job Responsibilities: RESPONSIBILITIES ================
1) Interpersonal, Communication, Leadership, and Professional - Oversee technical staff at multiple locations. Day-to-day guidance of team includes all of the following: prioritizing projects / workload, assigning projects and tasks, reviewing work queues, providing technical leadership and guidance, promoting IT values, giving management performance feedback, facilitating effective communication with and between team members and management, mentoring identified personnel. - Ensure appropriate development and training are planned for the staff in accordance with technology coverage needs and staff career interests. This includes membership in professional organizations and attendance at high-value conferences. - Conduct performance reviews of all staff under his/her supervision per the semi-annual BIP and annual performance review processes. - Perform ongoing professional and technical development of any team leads, enabling them to set technical goals, monitor, mentor, coach, and assist individual contributors to deliver quality support. - Develop and enhance cooperative inter-departmental and vendor/supplier relationships and communications. - Effectively communicate with contacts outside the team and lead peer relationship development both within the team and between teams.
2) Process - Maintain a 3 year roadmap for the evolution of the IT infrastructure in support of business objectives. The roadmap should take into consideration industry trends (but not hype), industry standards, and on-going changes in individual technology domains (storage, servers, endpoints, etc.). - Develop and maintain processes for infrastructure engineering based on recognized frameworks such as those from ITIL as well as standard concepts of requirements gathering and analysis, solution option comparison, ROI analysis, POC testing, etc. - Ensure engineered solutions meet overall business and technical requirements (e.g., cost, scalability, performance, worldwide supportability) and can support operational SLA targets. - Work with the Operations team to agree division of responsibilities, and define and refine operational metrics. - Ensure the engineers resolve escalated (Tier 3) problems per the agreed SLA. - Ensure all applicable SOX controls are fully complied with. - Participate in and drive participation of the team in the organization's change management process. - Support Operations in their management of equipment inventory: stock levels, spares ordering, repair, warranty management, disposal. - Prepare an annual budget per the budget timeline. Maintain an on-going registry of needs and associated budget asks so as to minimize effort during budgeting cycles. - Provide input to the ongoing performance and capacity management processes.
3) Technology - Broad and deep experience across all infrastructure domains: a) data centers: space, flooring, HVAC, power, cabling, green design, etc. b) converged networks: data (LAN, MAN, WAN, WLAN) and telephony (IP PBX, Unified Communications and Unified Messaging), etc. c) storage: SAN, NAS, DAS - including virtualization. d) servers: Windows and UNIX (Solaris, Linux), blade systems, virtualization (Solaris Zones, VMware, Hyper-V); e) endpoints: Windows and Linux PCs, VDI, audio-visual systems, output devices (MFPs, projectors), mobile device management, etc. f) systems management: ticketing, monitoring systems (EMSs, NMSs, MOMs), inventory systems (CMDB), etc. g) key infrastructure applications: directory services (AD, LDAP), DNS, S/FTP, etc. h) XaaS: SaaS, PaaS, IaaS, Cloud technologies/solutions - Maintain current knowledge of industry trends and standards as they pertain to infrastructure, and their potential impact on the engineering processes and team. - Maintain overview knowledge of the applications development and security peer domains so as to help ensure their considerations are factored into the infrastructure engineering processes. - Assist with the evolution of the company's BC/DR roadmap and systems.
4) Project Management - Oversee the delivery of all engineering projects. Take overall direction from and report project status to senior IT management. - Ensure projects and work efforts are being performed in accordance with the objectives for quality, timeliness, cost, SLA and any other identified criteria. - Ensure Engineering projects comply with IT Life Cycle Management processes and activities as required. - Participate in the management of relevant cross-functional project teams.
QUALIFICATIONS ==============
- 15 or more years of progressive management experience within the IT domain. - 5 or more years of direct management experience performing infrastructure engineering in an enterprise class company (1000+ staff). - Superior ability to communicate, both in writing and orally, and with all levels of management. - Operational discipline and thoroughness in all aspects of his/her work - e.g., status reporting, documentation, developing and improving process and procedure. - Ability to plan and work to an identified set of priorities, which can change rapidly due to unforeseen business needs. - Leadership skills including strong desire to deliver, proactive attitude, relationship building, responsiveness, and tactful candor. - Outstanding teamwork and collaborative/consultative orientation: within the engineering team, with other IT teams, with other Brocade departments and functions. - Deep knowledge of and experience with all infrastructure domains. - Demonstrated project management skills in the engineering of advanced infrastructure solutions for a distributed company (preferably global). - Average to superior skills with MS Office applications as well as familiarity with Microsoft Project and Visio. - College degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering or equivalent, or equivalent experience. - Must be able to lift up to 50 pounds occasionally. - Must be able to exert up to 20 pounds of force occasionally.
