Game Guides Editor

Job Title Game Guides Editor
Auto req ID 4634BR
CBS Business Unit CBS Interactive
Division/Station Operations - US Media
Department Games, Music & Lifestyle - Gamespot
Location California - San Francisco
Job Description The Game Guides Editor position requires a strong knowledge of a wide variety of different types of games on all game platforms, strong written and communication skills, and the ability to write high-quality strategy guides for games. The ideal candidate will already possess extensive experience writing strategy guides and walk- throughs for games, and will possess both the ability to be detail-oriented and thorough when writing a guide, while at the same time being able to deliver in-depth guides on a brisk and ongoing schedule. The candidate will also be expected to keep track of major game releases (and major downloadable content releases) throughout the year as potential game guide assignments.
Actual prior professional experience as a published game guides author is a definite plus, as is experience working in a team environment. Game guides are a collaborative project that requires input from graphic designers, occasional input from our technical production, and occasional coordination with GameSpot's video production group. The best candidate for this position will be able to collaborate with these team members, and with the assigning editor, to turn out a healthy quantity of high-quality strategy guides on schedule while meeting design, production, and video deadlines. Strong time management skills will be extremely important for this position since there will definitely be busy periods during the year in which multiple important game titles that require guides are released--potentially requiring the editor to tackle multiple guides at once as well as working with assigning editor to commission freelance guide writers if needed.
It may also happen that the game guides editor will be tapped to participate in additional editorial projects, such as blogging, various feature stories and potentially coverage of major game trade shows, but by and large, 99.9% of the position's responsibility is a full-time focus on producing high- quality, in-depth strategy guides on time.
Responsibilities:
• Playing through and writing guides for major game releases to meet reader demand
• Capturing screenshots and, where necessary, video of these games for use with the strategy guides and other associated projects. GameSpot has its own custom video and screenshot setup, but experience with media capture equipment is a plus.
• Work with design, video, and technical production departments to ensure all guide-associated assets are delivered on time and in spec.
• Work with assigning editor to follow major game release schedules (and downloadable content schedules) and plan out guide production ahead of time.
• Occasionally contribute to GameSpot's editorial product in other ways, such as preview coverage at major trade shows or contributing to certain staff- driven feature stories.
Required Skills/Experience • BA/BS degree or equivalent 4 years' worth of higher education, preferably in English, Journalism, or other writing-related field. Formal writing training a plus.
• 3 years previous experience working for a world-class gaming editorial organization covering features, reviews, previews.
• Highly organized, detail- oriented, and skilled at multi- tasking.
• Effective scheduling and time management skills are crucial to this position. Previous experience as a professional strategy guide author also strongly preferred.
• Experience writing a high- quality, regularly updated public blog a plus.
• Strong personal rapport and communication skills.
• Please submit a link to your previously published work or be able to provide writing samples.
• Must successfully pass a background check.
