IT Database Administrator
Description
The Database Administrator participates in the design, creation, and maintenance of computerized databases. Responsible for quality control and auditing of databases to ensure accurate and appropriate use of data. Consults with and advises users on access to various databases. Works directly with users to resolve data conflicts and inappropriate data usage. Directs the maintenance and use of the corporate data dictionary.
Principal Responsibilities: 1. Manages multiple relational or object oriented databases including Oracle, CACHE, DB2, and SQL: manages processes, namespaces, journaling, etc.; performs installation and upgrades; database refresh; monitors and reviews logs; applies appropriate database security measures.
2. Provides technical expertise and assistance to team members and users.
3. Monitor database system details within the database, including stored procedures and execution time, and implement efficiency improvements.
4. Work with application development staff to develop or modify database architectures.
5. Provides input in the design and implement redundant systems, policies, and procedures for disaster recovery and data archiving to ensure effective protection and integrity of data assets.
6. Develop and document routines, diagrams, and reports that end-users can use to facilitate support and best practices in database use and management.
7. Assists in initial project analysis including feasibility studies, proposals, quotations, scope, time line, task list, and duration of projects.
8. Participates in database transaction and security audits.
9. Assists in collection and analysis of real-time trending information.
Education and Experience
1. Bachelor's degree in computer science, MIS, mathematics or engineering or equivalent work experience is required.
2. Four years systems/database administration experience with resilient highly available relational or object oriented databases such as Oracle or Cache, preferably in a healthcare environment. Strong knowledge of Chronicles and UNIX - AIX, Solaris, HP-UX. Strong knowledge of one required.
3. Certification in database design or administration, hands-on troubleshooting and tuning experience, project management, and knowledge of applicable data privacy practices and laws preferred.
IV. Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
1. Working knowledge of one or two of the following relational or object oriented databases; Oracle, CACHE, DB2, and SQL.
2. Working knowledge of AIX, HP-UX or SUN Solaris UNIX operating systems.
3. Ability to read and follow instructions accurately, timely and effectively and provide direction to junior staff members.
4. Effective communication and organization skills; demonstrates confidence and creativity.
5. Excellent customer service skills and the ability to work with all levels within the organization.
6. Ability to perform daily work activities of the position assuring prompt and effective response to customer needs.
7. Proficient in analysis and problem solving, ability to assess customer needs and determining appropriate solutions.
8. Ability to understand and adhere to systems security and control procedures in accordance with departmental, vendor standards and regulatory bodies.
