The Managing Director will occupy a newly created role to drive the build-out, integration and sustained growth of our IT Strategy & Optimization practice. Working in concert with the overall Higher Education practice, the Managing Director will leverage his/her deep consulting and broad technology acumen to establish new client relationships and build on existing client partnerships across some of the world’s most prestigious educational centers. The Managing Director will identify client pain points with a keen eye for going beyond symptoms to address root causality; connect those pain points to business opportunities; create and close proposals; and ultimately deliver bold yet pragmatic and sustainable long-term transformational solutions delivered within the context of his/her deep understanding and commitment to their client’s mission activities and long-term strategic objectives.
The Higher Education sector is rapidly changing. The Managing Director will serve as a thought-leader to guide their clients through this complex change, ensure their client’s continued viability and directly impact the ability of their clients to serve society with excellence. Key client issues include those related to:
* Assessing the alignment of the information technology function with the strategic priorities of the institution, as well as institutional customer needs. * Assessing the effectiveness of governance, communications, policy and procedure, planning and budgeting, project prioritization, and project management related to administrative, academic, and research systems. * Assessing the strength and approach to underlying critical information technology infrastructure (e.g., networks, server room(s) and strategy, security, backup, risk mitigation). * Benchmarking segments of the information technology function against other higher education institutions. * Developing recommendations to promote more efficient, effective, and flexible delivery of information technology services. * Identifying opportunities to promote cost efficiencies through consolidation of expenditures. * Determining the appropriate level of information technology resources (both staff and funding) necessary to support the needs of the institution. * Articulating the optimal organization of information technology resources within the central information technology organization, as well as between central and local information technology units. * Assessing the degree to which information technology sourcing can reduce cost as a result of standardization, price discounts, and demand management.
Given the criticality and visibility of the issues addressed by their practice, the Managing Director will have to work with empathy, relevance and impact at all levels, and across multiple functions within client institutions. Key points of interface will routinely put the Managing Director into the office of the Chancellor, President, Vice Chancellor of Research, Chief Information Officer, Chief Operations Officer, Chief Financial Officer, Chief Information Security Officer, Chief Technology Officer…etc.
Collaboration is a hallmark of Huron culture. The Managing Director will work collaboratively with their team and across their peers to serve his/her clients with excellence. He/she will work extensively with Huron leadership up to the C-level and across key support functions like Finance, Legal, Marketing, and Operations. As the leader of their practice, he/she will also carry accountability for building and developing their team through playing a hands-on role in recruiting, hiring, coaching, and mentoring talent to achieve consistently increasing levels of team and practice performance. Job Requirements:
The role of Managing Director is multi-faceted and dynamic. While activities will vary over time, he/she can expect to spend their time as follows: 50% building the practice and identifying and closing new business; 20% developing people/team; 15% servicing on-going engagements; 10% coordinating and collaborating across key functions and with fellow Managing Directors in the Huron organization, and 5% executing administrative and operational tasks.
Additional responsibilities:
* Initiate and close large-scale engagements. * Drive multiple concurrent projects. * Delivery of project engagements on-time and on-budget. * Serve as a trusted advisor to clients. * Serve as an industry thought-leader through presenting at conferences and developing white papers on topics that anticipate or outpace industry trends. * Deliver superior client service to augment Huron’s market positioning as the premier Higher Education consultancy. * Work in close partnership with other Managing Directors/Directors to capture and maximize revenue opportunities. * Uphold and enhance the reputation of our Higher Education practice as delivering the highest quality service to high-level engagements across some of the world’s most prestigious institutions of higher learning. * Provide leadership in creating and architecting solution sets which fit strategically within the Higher Education practice.
Ideal Candidate:
The ideal candidate is a technology expert and will be generating revenue and in a top-tier consultancy as a Managing Partner, Partner, Principal or Senior Director. He/she will have an established reputation for securing and delivering large-scale, profitable and high quality engagements and is astute with driving and managing broad technology change initiatives in complex client environments with multiple stakeholders/perspectives.
Qualifications:
* Direct ownership for business development; proven ability to sell profitable, large-scale technology transformation/optimization engagements within a best-in-class consultancy. Preferred verticals include but are not limited to: - Higher Education - Academic Medical Center - Healthcare - Government * Strong familiarity with all facets of technology including data centers, network s, telecom systems and help desk management. * Deep operational understanding of technology including budgeting, capital planning cost allocations, and chargeback rate development. * Previous or current experience as a CIO or Director of Technology is a plus. * Deep experience performing and delivering assessments of technology functions. * Certified Information Systems Auditor (CISA) or similar certification is preferred. * Proven capacity to confidently “fill in the blanks” when few facts are available. * Demonstrated commitment to the design and delivery of high-quality engagements. * Strong listening and needs assessment skills; ability to identify root issues versus symptoms. * Highly collaborative; able to demonstrate skills managing across teams, functions and business areas. * Keen ability to maintain sharp focus amidst competing priorities; the acumen to effectively manage time, teams and projects. * Strong written and verbal communication. * Expert at conveying technical content to non-technical audiences. * Operational discipline. * Entrepreneurial spirit; the drive to build and grow a dynamic and vibrant business. * Technology-oriented Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited institution. An MBA with a technology focus is strongly preferred.
