Optical Instrument Technician
Technicians in this position design, fabricate and maintain optical/electrical components of tooling and production measuring instruments. Set up, diagnose, repair and operate instruments, calibrate and use standards that verify attributes of equipment per drawings, specifications, sketches and procedures. May require 20/20 vision. Obtain, examine and use drawings, sketches, specifications, lab procedures and other documentation (6M61-200 Optical Equipment Service Manual), using online computing systems. Visually inspect unit under test for discrepancies that could affect accuracy. Set up unit under repair (transit, laser tracker, theodolite) using appropriate support fixtures (alignment bench, carts, test stand) and attachments (targets, mounts, adapters). Perform preliminary adjustments, zeroing of instrument prior to accomplishing diagnoses of item under repair. Perform repair work per non-conformance reports from calibration/certification inspection and/or customer. Clean delicate surfaces and/or optical paths (bearing races, optics, electrical components) to remove contaminants, using appropriate solvents and materials, Perform repair, modification and/or calibration on conventional optical instruments (levels, alignment scopes, microscopes) and computer-aided optical instruments (theodolite, Laser tracker, V-Stars) using appropriate instruments (voltmeter, collimator, interferometer). Verify accuracy of in-process repair and/or completed instrument, up to millionths of an inch/arc second. Work with mathematical computations (algebra, geometry, trigonometry) necessary to set up, repair and/or calibrate the unit under repair. Troubleshoot, test, repair, modify and install various types of computer/electronic systems used on experimental and production optical measuring systems. Perform computer upgrade for operation of 3D measuring systems (software, components, configure) set up, maintain and operate, per requirements. Perform removal/installation of optical components to grind, polish and coat lenses and prisms to customer requirements. Perform maintenance, repair and adjustment of mechanical/electrical components (motors, bearings, leveling screws) to allow adjustments of optical components. Operate fabrication equipment (conventional/NC lathe and/or mill, drill press, grinders) to build optical/electrical test fixtures and accessories (photo sensors, alignment fixtures, test stands). Use necessary precision measurement tools. Support Manufacturing Research and Development (MR&D) on new technology measuring systems (photo-gammetry, scanning lasers) to design, layout, fabricate, assemble accessories and set up (adapters, targets, mounts) for the required application. Work with MR&D engineers to provide documentation and sketches to place a new part design into the Boeing Optical Tool catalog. Develop methods and procedures for optical measurement processes to be used on items requiring repair/calibration.
