Principal Design Engineer
Title: Principal Design Engineer Location: MN-Waseca Itron is looking for a Principle Design Engineerwho will design, modify and manage activities for a specific product or group of products from product definition and planning through production and release. The Principle Design Engineer will also serve as the central resource withdesign, process, manufacturing, test, quality and marketing as the product(s) move to completion and distribution. This involvement lasts throughout all stages of a product's lifecycle, from product release through maintenance of the product and end of life decisions. The Principle Design Engineer will have a deep understanding of quality and quality control systems, knowledge ofDesign for X Concepts(where X = High Volume Manufacturing, Test, Reliability, etc.) and have solid problem solving skills (nor Trego(sp) trained). Skills within these areas are vital in promoting, investigating, and applying new technologies and industry trends to product management activities are essential activities necessary to ensure that products shipped meet specifications and quality goals. Key Functions * Use advanced experience writing firmware primarily with c, c and assembly code that works with different compilers (TI MSP 430 and IAR Compiler) and chipsets * Design power supply focused firmware solutions that work on small, battery operated modules by creating low speed applications on low speed hardware components by working with analog engineers * Select electrical/electronic components and work with purchasing authorities to approve quality suppliers * Create firmware applications for end products and develop test codes and test suites for validation using code space as a key priority, creating designs that draw very little current using minimum power * Communicate proposed software/firmware changes in a design review setting, and implement changes with minimal oversight * Understand reliability challenges of designing products that need to operate in a harsh outdoor environments * Produce applications that are able switch between C and Assembly Code easily to create compiler output that is easy to understand Duties and Responsibilities * Develop, commercialize and support the field and/or customer introduction of new products and systems by ensuring that projects are planned and executed in a timely and efficient manner, carried out according to standards, consistent with established scientific and engineering practice, effectively implemented and communicated * Plan and coordinate own research and engineering projects along with the research of others by evaluating market opportunities in area of competence * Maintain extensive client contacts and continuously assesses their needs and propose solutions by serving as a technical interface between Itron, academia and industry consortia * Direct the work of other Engineers and Technical Support Staff, act as a mentor for Engineers, participate in recruiting initiatives * Works with other Product Centers to coordinate projects as a direct contributor or in an advisory capacity as an analytical, interpretive, evaluative and/or constructive resource * Understands business objectives linked to the development and application of technology by participating in patent documentation, concept and technology generation * Publish documents, make presentations and participate in technical audits * Complies with applicable company policies, including Personnel, Quality System and Health, Safety and Environment standards and procedures Experience:This position requires a minimum of 5-10 years design experience. * Demonstrated experience with Instrumentation and measurement tools, (i.e. Oscilloscopes, network analyzer, modulation analyzer, logic analyzer, etc.) * Strong communication skills, both verbal and written * Able to develop firmware specifications and theory of operations documents * Able to lead a design review * Proven experience with Windows Applications (i.e. Visual Basic, LabVIEW, InstallShield) * Basic hardware troubleshooting skills * Strength in architecting firmware for easy trouble shooting, add on, resuse, platform, etc Education:Bachelor's degree required in the preferred fields of BSEE/BSEET/BSCS/BSCE (Computer Science/Engineering). Masters Degree a plus Certification(s): Travel:1 - 10%
