POSITION RESPONSIBILITIES
The Blackboard Product Development department has a proven track record of delivering quality products to our customer base. The Network Administration Team, which is comprised of Network Engineers and Systems Administrators, provides systems support to Product Development for approximately 400 servers and network devices. This support role is critical for the day-to-day operations of developing quality software and delivering it on time.
The Sr. Systems Administrator will play an integral role in the success of the Network Administration Team. Specifically s/he will be responsible for:
* Managing, monitoring and maintaining approximately 700 servers, 800 virtual machines and network devices that are used by Product Development for developing, testing and delivering software products. * Supporting the Quality Assurance cycle build process using home grown automation tools. * Providing server systems support to all members of the Product Development Team. * Advanced system installation methods such as Ghost, Kickstart, Jumpstart or Remote Installation Services. System are updated or re-installed on a regular basis depending upon the requirements of the software development process. * Planning and executing recurring system maintenance tasks, including the application of operating system patches and conducting system security audits. * Lifting and carrying 50lb servers; installing rack mount servers and network devices in 2- and 4-post racks with minimal assistance. Required Experience
PROFESSIONAL QUALIFICATIONS * Bachelor's degree or equivalent working experience in a technical field. This experience should result in the ability to understand complex technical requirements and communicate them clearly in a verbal or written format. * 5+ years experience working in a mixed Operating System environment including at least one Linux variant (Red Hat, SUSE, Debian), one UNIX variant (Solaris, HP-UX, AIX) and one Windows variant (Server 2000, Server 2003). * 5+ years experience with server hardware installation and maintenance. Dell and Sun experience is preferred. * 2+ years experience with server infrastructure (space, power, cooling) maintenance and capacity planning. * 2+ years with experience with network infrastructure (routers, switches, load balancers, DNS, NAS/SAN) design and maintenance. Cisco, Netgear, Network Appliance and Big-IP experience is preferred. * Experience with database application (MySQL, Oracle, SQL Server) installation and basic maintenance. * Intermediate-to-Advanced UNIX (Bash/Perl/Ant) and Windows (Batch/Perl/WMI) scripting abilities; must be familiar with script development best practices. * Relevant Certifications: A+, Network+, Security+, MCSA, MCSE, CCNA, CCDP, RHCA, RHCE, SSCA, and OCP.
