Opportunity
Berkeley Lab is seeking a seasoned Software Engineer to join the Energy Sciences Network (ESnet). Managed and operated by staff at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, the Energy Sciences Network provides high-speed connections to all major Department Of Energy sites, tying them to the global Research and Education community and the commercial Internet. Funded principally by DOE's Office of Science, ESnet is developing cutting edge services that allow scientists to make effective use of unique DOE research facilities and computing resources.
One mission of ESnet is to develop a portfolio of exploratory new projects by working closely with DOE scientists, such as climate researchers trying to better understand global warming and high-energy physicists using supercollider data to gain a better understanding of the origins of the universe, to determine their networking requirements. As scientific data sets are fast approaching petabytes/year, ESnet is deploying one of the world?s first national scale 100 Gigabit networks as well as providing access to cloud computing services to scientists across the globe.
Duties for the Computer Systems Engineer (CSE) 2, 3 and 4 levels This position will work in a results-driven development environment on a wide array of problems including:
Software development, software installation, configuration and testing
Performance testing and analysis
Assisting with design of various software components
Assisting with collecting requirements from users and interpretation of user requirements into the software architecture
Database design and tuning.
In addition to the duties of the CSE 2 duties, the CSE 3 position will also be responsible for:
Leading design of various software components
Working with outside collaborators on overall project direction and design
Tracking next generation network technologies and providing expert advice on when a technology is ready for use by a project in the department
In addition to the duties of the CSE 2, and CSE 3 duties, the CSE 4 position will also be responsible for:
Be a lead software architect on a wide range of network-related projects, including projects related to dynamic virtual circuits, network monitoring and troubleshooting, etc.
Drive software architecture, design and implementation of new proof-of-concept demonstrations
Lead adoption of new software design tools and methodology within ESnet
Qualifications
BS degree or equivalent work experience in Computer Science, Engineering or related field.
Demonstrated experience programming in a number of languages, including C/C++, Python, Java, and Perl, in a Unix environment.
Knowledge of modern Web technologies and development tools such as javascript, ajax, php, etc.
Desired experience programming with databases, MySQL
Excellent organizational, communications, and documentation skills. Be able to work on multiple tasks and accept fluid situations.
Demonstrated ability to work both independently, work collaboratively in an interdisciplinary team, and contribute to an active intellectual environment.
In addition to the CSE 2 qualifications, the CSE 3 must have:
A minimum of eight years related experience
Experience designing and implementing large software projects
Experience developing distributed systems software
In addition to the CSE 2 and CSE 3 qualifications, the CSE 4 must have:
A minimum of twelve years related experience
Demonstrated skills architecting and implementing large software projects, with leadership role
Experience working with customers and/or giving detailed presentations to a large technical audience
Other Desired Qualifications
MS degree or equivalent.
Demonstrated experience with system administration of Linux/Unix systems.
Experience with agile software development methodologies.
Knowledge network and routing protocols
