Title: Software Engineer - Web Developer - Olathe, KS Location: KS-Olathe POSITION SUMMARY:Develop web applications, web services, and mobile products serving a worldwide community of Fitness and Recreational GPS users and developers. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: * Develop rich, engaging, web application components and interfaces specializing in online mapping and geo-social networking using the latest web technologies including AJAX, JSP, Javascript, XHTML and CSS. * Build a Web 2.0 community website specializing in online mapping and geo-social fitness and recreational networking and integrate with other social websites * Work with product managers, designers, and other developers to incorporate visual design into functional web pages * Build RESTful web services using XML, enterprise Java and database development * Define and build a developer API to be used by Garmin software engineers and third-party developers * Participate in the full lifecycle of development from conception, analysis, design, implementation, testing and deployment OTHER RESPONSIBILITIES: * Continually improve development process while interacting with a small, efficient team * Maintain current knowledge of web design techniques, web development tools, and social web trends * Participate in the development and documentation for developer APIs * Perform rotational assignments to gain experience in various aspects of software development from continuous build management to website localization * Perform other duties as desired such as customer service via forum participation EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE, AND SKILLS REQUIRED: * Bachelor of Science or above in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering or Computer Engineering from a four-year college or university, or equivalent educations/experience * Strong academics (cumulative GPA greater than or equal to 3.0 as a general rule) * Relevant experience and/or training with Java and J2EE (JSP / Struts / JSF / EJB 3 / Hibernate) * Relevant experience and/or training with XML, XPath, XML Schema, and Web Services (SOAP / REST) * Relevant experience and/or training with Javscript, HTML, XSLT, CSS, AJAX * Relevant experience and/or training with Eclipse, Oxygen XML / XML Spy * Relevant experience and/or training with database development (Oracle / Oracle Spatial, MySQL, Sybase, SQL Server) DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS: * Excellent academics (cumulative GPA greater than or equal to 3.5) * Previous experience working in a team environment * Familiarity with the GPS or Fitness domains space * Relevant experience and/or training with Flash, ActionScript * Relevant experience and/or training with source control tools (Subversion, Perforce, CVS, GIT) * Relevant experience and/or training with test-driven development (Ant / Maven / JUnit / Continuous Integration) * Relevant experience and/or training with Google Maps, Google Earth, Yahoo Maps, Microsoft Virtual Earth * Relevant experience and/or training with JBoss Application Server, Tomcat, JBoss WS / Apache Axis, Seam * Relevant experience and/or training with mobile application development (iPhone OS, Pal, OS, Android 2.0) EEO/AA/M/F/D/V
