go top Job Description The Pacific Northwest National Laboratory seeks an individual with broad computer science interests and specific software development skills to participate in on-going and new research projects. Researchers in the Global Security Technology & Policy technical group apply human-centered design principles to the design and development of information analysis applications. Group expertise includes client- and server-side software development, human-computer interaction, enterprise-scale computing, and human-systems integration. After joining this team, the scientist will proactively engage in research and development of unique information analysis applications in national security and environmental domains. Through team engineering and agile development processes, the successful candidate will have the opportunity to participate in efforts of national importance. Through the proactive application of a structured development process (requirements analysis, system design, software development and testing, and deployment support), they will participate in the development of information analysis systems that enable domain practitioners to execute their jobs in more effective and efficient manners. They will also support outreach activities and client interaction through efforts including written communications, demonstrations, and presentations about technical activities. Minimum Requirements Applicants must have a Bachelor's degree in the computer science. Advanced degrees in closely related fields plus significant development experience will also be considered. * Level I: BS & 0-1- years related experience. * Level II: BS & 2-3 years experience; MS & 1-2 years related experience. Qualifications This position is accountable for participating in software development projects and performing system administration tasks as assigned. Involvement in these projects includes all stages of the software engineering process, including but not limited to: requirements gathering and related documentation; application design and related documentation; programming with adherence to each project's coding standards and commenting requirements; unit and system-level testing and related documentation; source code revision control; and active participation in agile development practices. Regular attendance at project meetings, capability development meetings, and technical group meetings will be required. The principal accountabilities of this position include: * Participation in the software requirements analysis and design processes, to include software architecture and user interface design * Programming in multiple languages and frameworks, for desktop and web applications * Software testing, to include the creation of test plans and the development of unit and system tests * Creation and management of software and system documentation * Administration of collaboration/demonstration space, tools and machines Position Level Requirements: * Technical Expertise: Required capabilities include strong object-oriented software design/development skills and experience with web application development. Practical experience with software engineering and structured development processes (requirements gathering, conceptual design, test plan development, detailed design, software testing, deployment support) is highly desired. Due to current work activities, this position requires experience with the Ruby on Rails (RoR) web framework (or closely-related technologies) and the Java programming language. Experience with Eclipse Rich Client Platform (RCP) a plus. * Level of Responsibility: The successful candidate will demonstrate the ability to be a contributing professional who has started to build a professional reputation for technical expertise. They will fully apply and interpret standard theories, principles, methods, tools and technologies. The level of responsibility includes independently completing recurring assignments, exercising limited judgment on work assignments and making preliminary selections and adaptations of technical alternatives. The successful candidate will be a self-starter having excellent problem solving skills, with a desire to continuously upgrade their skills. They will work well in an interdisciplinary team environment and possess strong interpersonal skills. * Breadth of Relevant Technical Knowledge: Good working knowledge of general computer systems, architecture, and software engineering. Experience with software development environments and general principles associated with their use. Experience developing databases and database-driven applications. Experience in graphical user interface (GUI) implementation and design for desktop and web applications. Experience with distributed computing applications a plus. * Communication Skills: Excellent (English) oral and written communication skills as emphasized through authored documents, presentations, and interviews must be demonstrated.
