Requirements:
The Data Base Administrator (DBA) is responsible for providing technical support for the database environment including overseeing the development and organization of the databases, assessment and implementation of new technologies, and providing Information Technology with a long-term perspective on the relationship of database technology to the business opportunities facing the company. It is extremely important to the company that on-line processing database systems offer the highest reliability and performance possible. The DBA is challenged to work with architecture, application development and operations to help achieve a state-of-the-art environment that meets current and future business objectives. Provides and designs tools to assist in the management of the database and transaction processing environment. Works to provide a working model of our transaction processing environment for capacity assessment and planning.
Develops a methodology for the ongoing assessment of database performance and the identification of problem areas. Develops a security scheme for the database environment, as well as assisting in disaster recovery if necessary. Provides leadership during the development and enhancement of production applications including working with applications, technical support and operations during the design, development and implementation of applications. Work with the transaction processing area to develop both the physical and the logical database administration functions and assists in the development of our processing database and computing environments. Work with others in IT to build the logical database area and provide technical guidance during all phases of the development process. Work with vendors in evaluating and implementing new technologies.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
The essential functions of the position include, but are not limited to, the following duties:
Maintain the reliability and uptime of these systems.
Responsible for responding to alerts and resolve issues with these databases and perform all the administrative duties as assigned.
Ensure availability and performance of the databases that support the system. Proactively monitor the database systems to ensure minimum downtime. Work with the IT team to maintain the databases.
Capacity planning and monitoring database growth. Provide trend analysis to management team to enable them to make informed decisions regarding resource management.
Responsible for troubleshooting and problem solving of issues related to the SQLServer databases.
Responsible for the improvement and maintenance of the databases to include upgrades.
Responsible for implementation and release of database changes according to agreed timescales and costs.
Write logical and physical database descriptions and create/maintain Data Dictionary.
Create shell scripts for task automation.
Oversee backup, clustering, mirroring, replication and failover.
24x7 and on-call support duties.
Other duties as assigned
Occasional travel may be req'd
Education and Qualifications
4 year degree in Computer Science, IT, MIS or related field
MCDBA/OCP certification a plus
MCITP: DBA/Developer/BI Developer certification a plus
5+ years of experience working with relational databases specifically SQL Server in a high transaction environment such as banking or insurance.
Knowledge of the Windows Server O/S and AD authentication.
Knowledge of storage architecture as it relates to physical DB design.
Knowledge of SQL reporting services and other application features.
Ability to write & tune SQL scripts for data retrieval and reporting.
Experience analyzing and developing advanced DTS and SSIS packages.
Experience with 3rd party SQL Backup and Restore Applications.
Experience with DB mirroring, log shipping and programs similar to Double Take
Experience with encryption and user management.
Adaptability to changing priorities and flexible workloads
Able to work long hours when required
Must be able to interact with all levels of Technical staff and support staff
The ability to work with minimum supervision to deliver the tasks outlined above
