Position Summary:Creates product manuals, specification sheets, and other documents for use by customers, manufacturer's representatives, and in-house sales force.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
* Creates product documentation for all Pelco products, including products manufactured outside Pelco, as assigned by the Technical Writing Manager.
* Prepares and maintains documentation plans for assigned projects.
* Corrects, revises, and maintains product documentation to keep them current with product changes.
* Works well in a deadline-driven environment with high attention to detail and consistency.
* Works closely with a diverse group of people (Product Management, Engineering, Production, and others) to develop product materials.
* Researches and gathers information from a variety of sources to create and maintain documentation.
* Works with Technical Illustrators to develop illustrations for product documentation.
* Works with Technical Publication Specialists on final layout and release of product documentation.
* Works with Copy Editor, Technical Writing Manager, and representatives from other departments during the formal review process to make sure product documentation meets the needs of each department.
* Edits and proofreads own documents to make sure they are error-free.
* Responds to inquiries from the field regarding technical aspects of Pelco's product line.
* Adheres to health, fire, and safety regulations; identifies potential safety hazards and reports such to the Human Resources Director.
* Upholds Pelco's Commitment to Excellence standards at all times.
* Performs related duties as assigned.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Required:
* Three to five years of technical writing experience.
* Degree in Journalism, English, or related communication field.
* Extensive knowledge of correct English usage, vocabulary, and spelling.
* Extensive knowledge of basic publication principles, theories, and concepts.
* Knowledge of software development and documentation requirements, including online help, single-sourced documentation, and topic-based authoring with DITA.
* Knowledge of different writing styles and standards.
* Ability to communicate effectively in written form to various technical audiences.
* Ability to present material in a general-to-specific format and in a logical and concise manner.
* Ability to independently research, gather, and organize information and materials necessary to create product documentation.
* Ability to communicate effectively and tactfully with those contacted in the course of work, in both written and oral forms.
* Ability to manage multiple projects in a timely manner.
* Ability to operate a computer and associated peripherals.
* Experience with Adobe FrameMaker and Microsoft Office.
* Ability to work in a drug-free environment and pass a pre-employment drug screen.
Desirable:
* Experience with XML authoring tools, such as Arbortext Editor.
* Experience with content management systems, such as Arbortext Content Manager or Documentum.
* Experience with online help generation tools, such as RoboHelp.
* Experience with graphics software, such as CorelDraw or Adobe Illustrator.
* Experience with product localization.
* Fluency in a second language.
* Knowledge of basic electronics, including technical terminology, abbreviations and symbols.
* Knowledge of computer hardware, software, and networking.
* Familiarity with Linux or other non-Windows operating systems.
