POSITION SUMMARY The Research In Motion (RIM) Cellular Technologies group (RCT) is responsible for the development and testing of next generation BlackBerry products. The test group within RCT relies on an ever increasing and diverse range of automated solutions to increase productivity and improve overall product quality. Automation covers a wide range of areas including local and remote control of phones and test equipment; scheduling of the remote resources; log analysis to classify issues and extract metrics; results management to identify trends, anomalies and track coverage; and build configuration and issue management. The existing systems predominately use C and Perl for low level process control; SWI Prolog for distributed control, scheduling and data analysis; and data management via an SQL database with user interaction provided using MS Reporting Services. Your role would be to assume responsibility for the future evolution and ongoing maintenance of this system. You will review the current use of automation and use your experience to identify opportunities for future improvement. You will liaise with the key stakeholders to understand how best to evolve the system, improving efficiency and minimising long term maintenance overhead, and all the while providing uninterrupted support to the ongoing work of the group. You will need to be prepared to help with the maintenance of the legacy systems and where sensible develop new features on top of existing code base. But you will also be free to re-engineer using new approaches/languages if this is in line with the overall strategy above. The ideal candidate will possess a diverse range of programming skills and techniques, including C/C and will have proven ability for independent development of novel automation solutions. They will also be exposed to leading edge development of mobile communications stacks and be presented with the opportunity to train and acquire knowledge in this area.
ESSENTIAL SKILLS AND QUALIFICATIONS * Degree in Computer Science or related discipline. * Proven ability to programme in at least one of C, C , Perl. * Self motivated and able to design and implement solutions independently.
ADDITIONAL ASSETS * Prolog, especially SWI with XPCE GUIs * Database application development * Perl or similar scripting experience * Application and server GUI development * Experience of Distributed process control * Experience of Process Automation * Other Languages: SQL, MS Reporting Services, Java, XML, HTML, Python.
