UNIX Systems Administrator

This position is for a Senior UNIX System Administrator who can maintain smooth operation of multi-user computer systems, including coordination with network administrators. The position requires interaction with users and evaluation of vendor products. Makes recommendations to purchase hardware and software, coordinates installation and provides backup recovery. Develops and monitors policies and standards for allocation relation to the use of computing resources. Ancillary duties may include setting up administrator and service accounts, maintaining system documentation, tuning system performance, installing system wide software and allocating mass storage didate should possess strong interpersonal and communications skills; be capable of writing proposals or papers, act as a vendor liaison, make presentations to management and professional peers. Candidate should be able to solve problems quickly and automate processes, display a solid understanding of an operating system; understand paging and swapping, inter-process communications, devices and device drivers, file system concepts and can use performance analysis to tune systems. Candidate should have a solid understanding of networking/distributed computing environment concepts; understand principles of routing, client/server programming, the design of consistent network-wide file system layouts and have the ability to program in an administrative language (Perl, Python, shell). Candidate will be expected to provide technical lead and/or supervise system administrators, design/implement and manage a complex local and wide-area network of machines and work under general direction from senior management to establish/recommend policies and procedures on system use and services.



Basic Qualifications:

At least five years of previous system administration experience, U. S. citizenship and the ability to obtain a Top Secret clearance are required. A degree in computer science, applied computing or a related field and extensive programming background in any applicable language are desirable.
