Title: Web Designer - Olathe, KS Location: KS-Olathe Design, develop, and maintain a worldwide website and supporting applications for the Garmin Fitness division. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: * Design and develop new features and improvements to Garmin Connect, a worldwide GPS-centric fitness and recreation activity analysis and community sharing website and supporting software * Create mockups and other visual representations to help determine the best approach for satisfying a set of requirements and use cases * Build the HTML and CSS based on the mockups and work with developers on integrating the dynamic features and content into web pages and components for a rich, engaging, user-centered experience * Work with product management, front-end developers and support staff to plan, develop, and incorporate visual design into functional web pages and related projects by their scheduled deadlines * Participate in the full lifecycle of development from conception, analysis, design, implementation and testing * Help with various responsibilities associated with the support of a worldwide commercial and social website OTHER RESPONSIBILITIES: * Maintain current knowledge of web design techniques, development tools, and social web trends * Stay abreast of current and upcoming multimedia as well as traditional design skills * Perform other job-related duties as desired such as interacting with customers through forum participation EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE, AND SKILLS REQUIRED: * Associates Degree in a related field or equivalent education and/or experience * Strong academics (cumulative GPA greater than or equal to 3.0 as a general rule) * Minimum of three years of experience performing a role similar to the essential functions of this job description * An online portfolio demonstrating a strong visual and conceptual design sense and a superior understanding of current coding practices, typography, color, and layout * Minimum of three years experience with web standards, usability, and accessibility principles * Superior understanding of current coding practices, including CSS-based design and semantic XHTML * Experience developing for and debugging issues related to cross-browser compatibility * Experience with the Adobe suite including Photoshop, Illustrator, Dreamweaver, and Flash * Expert computer skills (MacandPC) * Excellent verbal and written communication skills * Must be team-oriented, possess a positive attitude and work well with others * Must be flexible and able to work effectively in a fast-paced environment with minimal supervision * Strong organization skills and the ability to prioritize multiple tasks DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS: * Bachelors Degree in Visual Communication, Advertising Design, Computer Science or a related field * Strong academics (cumulative GPA greater than or equal to 3.5 as a general rule) * Previous experience in Visual Communications, Graphic Design, Advertising, or Marketing * Experience with Flash, ActionScript, JavaScript, Prototype, JQuery, AJAX, etc. * Eclipse, IntelliJ or equivalent IDE and CVS, Subversion or equivalent SCM * Experience with organizing, performing and applying results from usability testing * Prior experience working on a social website in an agile team environment * Experience with the challenges of designing and developing for a worldwide dynamically localized website * Familiarity with GPS-based fitness and recreation products and analysis domain space * Experience with consumer desktop or mobile application design and development EEO/AA/M/F/D/V
