How to Stay Motivated During the Job Search

Posted by

Every January, many people reevaluate short term and long term goals and inevitably lose motivation for certain aspects of goals before the winter is over. Since changing careers, I learned how vital motivation is to enduring jobless streaks, moving forward despite disappointments, and coping with minor setbacks. When you are looking for a job, mindset is key. So how can you drum up some motivation?

I'm always interested in what works for others as well as myself so I came upon this article. In it, author Dorothy Tannahill-Moran explains that the foundation of motivation lies in determing what routine works well for you and sticking with it.

When you are a job seeker, it can be difficult to schedule time to network, make calls, and apply for jobs. It seems that one wouldn't need a schedule when there is an abundance of free time. In fact, experts recommend scheduling your time even if you are not currently working. It gives your job search purpose and becomes easily remembered as a daily task. As I mentioned last week, motivation works best when we have measurable goals. One can argue that routines lead to success. If you act in a successful manner, you will be successful. (A variation of 'if you build it, they will come.') I put a lot of stock in that, however. When we have self-confidence, the path forward doesn't seem as tedious.

Tannahill-Moran also advises job seekers to find an accountability partner. It might be a good idea to search for a group of people who meet regularly to discuss goals, progress and setbacks. These people don't have to be friends and should be able to be honest. After all, an honest look at the job search helps motivation!

Have you had a lack of motivation during your job search? How did you overcome it? Let me know!
