Technology Staff Editor
Posted by

Name: Larry Letow Title/Employer: Chief Operating Officer, Convergence Technology Consulting Age: 44 Education: BA, MBA Tenure in IT industry: 19 years First ever tech job: Project manager for a government contractor Current role My role is broken down in to three main responsibilities:
  • Oversee the day-to-day operations Convergence Technology Consulting to include sales, finance, engineering
  • Facility Security Officer
  • Manage all contractual relationships (partnerships, etc)
What's been your best job and why? I really love working at Convergence. The people are wonderful. They make all the difference. What is the number one non-IT skill IT professionals need today? I would have to say focus on communication skills. Most engineers are very technical, but the IT "stars" have the ability to transfer that knowledge verbally at different levels (C-level, manager-director, and engineer level). I have only met a few "stars" in my lifetime " and Convergence has most of them. What do you credit your career success to? I have had a few mentors over the years. My father, Alan Letow, his teachings included a strong work ethic. My grandfather, Irving Letow, who taught me "everyone has different responsibilities within an organization, but when we walk out the door, we are all equal." My wife, Wendy Letow, who taught me to enjoy life. And Michael Adelman, who taught me the cruel life, (up and down), of sales. There is nothing like surrounding yourself with great people to drive your success.

What's your favorite IT resource site and why? CIO.com as they have a breadth of information for IT executives. What is the best career advice you've ever received? On the serious side it's 'be great at something.' On the humorous side it'd be 'pigs get fat, hogs get slaughtered. Don't be a hog.' What's the top advice you'd give to a new IT staffer? Do one thing at a time, do it to the best of your abilities and then move on to the next, and under-promise, over-deliver. What would you advise someone looking to find the type of role you currently have? Learn the business side of IT and not just the technical side. What is the one career decision you would change if you could? I would have liked to take more technical classes earlier in my career. If you had the choice to jump into any other job, tech or non-tech, what would it be? Golf professional as its my passion.
