What's been your best job and why? My current position as the owner and president of DBA Web Technologies has been the best job of my professional life because I have the satisfaction of being able to create jobs for some IT professionals in today's dwindling job market, especially in IT industry within United States. What do you think is the number one non-IT skill IT professionals need today? Ability to communicate with non-IT teams/users/employees in simple layman's language. What do you credit your career success to? Education. In 1995, when I decided to migrate from India, I had a job offer from a company in London. I told one of my professors who has always been my advisor. And his words were "Varesh: if you want to be successful in a foreign country and rise in professional life, get a degree from that country." I refused that London job offer, got admission in a U.S. university for MS in computer science and came here as a student and the rest is history. What are the top three skills a high-level IT manager needs today?
  • Align your IT initiatives with corporate business objectives.
  • Stay current with the latest trends in new and upcoming Technologies.
  • Know when your IT resource is trying to bluff.
What's your favorite IT resource site and why? Dice.com What is the best career advice you've ever received? Never assume that you know everything. What's the top advice you'd give to a new IT staffer? There is always a room for improvement. What would you advise someone looking to find the type of role you currently have? Be ambitious but have patience and listen. What is the one career decision you would change if you could? Decision on timing to start my own company. I waited for too long to start my own consulting company. If you had the choice to jump into any other job, tech or non-tech, what would it be? A writer. At one point in my 20s, writing (as a freelance journalist) was my hobby. The theme for most of my writings published in many newspapers in India used to be "Socio-economic issues and problems of Asia." I really miss my life as a writer.
