Given all the news about the talent crunch, have you or are you finding it more difficult to find qualified IT professionals? No, not from a pure IT skill set, however, it is difficult to find someone with both IT and business experience. What are your primary recruiting strategies? We work with a number of industry specific recruiters; however, most of our referrals are via networking. If a candidate is referred, chances are the pre-screening is done. What is the hiring process? We don't have a standardized test, but we ensure candidates go through two rounds of interviews with the management team. We focus on skill sets and other soft skills such as culture and fit within our organization. What should candidates know before they interview? Know the job they are applying for and to the extent that they can, research the company and the management team. Candidates should be aware of the company's mission or vision. What makes for an outstanding potential hire One aspect is for the candidate to be extremely prepared prior to an interview. What are red flags you look for when reviewing resumes, doing interviews? If the resume is grammatically incorrect or has spelling errors, I won't even read it. There is also a certain polish on how thoughts are organized and how well the resume is crafted to get the message across. Also, very long "essays" during a resume won't do. I review hundreds of resumes and don't have time to read every single one of them. As for interviews, people not dressed appropriately, not prepared, lacking confidence, etc. are also red flags. What kind of non-IT skills do your IT team members need, if any? Our business revolves around banks, having banking and commercial lending business skills are a must. How important is the cover letter in job queries? Any tips or advice to job seekers on what to do or not to do? Yes, a cover letter shows a certain professional polish to the "package." well written concise cover letter will always grab my attention. This is the first thing I read before I continue reading the resume. Is the IT organization looking for certified skills, is that a must have or is there any other qualification that is a must have? If you mean like a PMP, etc. then in our case no, as it is not the most important aspect of the job. However, if they have the certification, it is always a plus. Having said that, I have seen many smart people carry a certification and may be very academic about their approach; yet fail in the real world. Does the organization hire 'newbies' and invest in training and how well does that work, and if not, why not? No, we don't hire anyone without strong experience. What characteristics or personality traits do you want in a hire, and don't want? In this business, the candidate must be able to communicate to executives at a high level and yet work with certain IT staff with excruciating detail. People that I look for are self motivated and can work under time pressures. What does your company offer IT specialists as an employer? We will offer the candidate a safe and educational work environment. They will also learn to become subject matter experts in banking. Other recent articles from TechCareers Hiring Report: Keane Inc.
