    Your Role

    The manager of the Data Processing and Archive Services (DPAS) team provides leadership, supervision, technical direction and mentorship of a large, diverse team of astronomers and analysts. Join our team supporting astronomical data and services for NASA missions - HST, JWST, TESS and the future Roman Space Telescope. This team provides services related to data processing and archiving such as data receipt, archiving, catalog population, documentation, access, retrieval, analysis and helpdesk management. You will work with a team that is passionate about the work they do in support of astronomers around the world.

    Our software applications include data processing pipelines and data management systems. Your job will be to lead the people and processes that support the data management system of today and help shape future innovations that will allow us to continue to be the premier archive for data-driven astronomy in the 21st century.

    This position can support hybrid work. Candidates must reside in or be willing to relocate to our local market. (MD, DE, VA, PA, DC & WV).

    Team Manager Responsibilities include:

    • Manage the DPAS team of 18 operating 3 active missions and 1 future mission, working in an agile engineering environment

    • Advance the system to meet future needs of the astronomical community through continuous improvement activities

    • Functional staff management including recruitment, mentorship, training and coaching

    • Translate scientific needs into operational efficiency

    • Coordinate with other groups both within and outside STScI, such as engineering, IT and scientists

    • May require off hours work on occasion

    Qualifications:

    BS/BA in Engineering, Computer Science, Astronomy, Physics, or a related scientific or technical field.

    • 10+ years of progressive technical, management and leadership experience

    • Demonstrated experience operating a capable of processing and archiving large amounts of data

    • Demonstrated experience operating a large complex system capable of processing and archiving large amounts of data

    • Experience working within an environment that supports a science community

    • Demonstrated experience with operations in a cloud environment

    • Experience working with a DevOps team

    • Demonstrated effective communication skills

    • US Citizenship or Permanent Residence in order to meet ITAR requirements

    BENEFICIAL SKILLS

    • Experience with operating data pipelines

    • Experience with managing large astronomical data sets

    • Experience with AWS

    • Experience working within an environment that supports a science community

    The salary range for this position is between $150,000 - $175,000. Substitution of additional relevant education and/or experience for stated qualifications may be considered. Compensation is commensurate with education, skills and experience. Our excellent benefits include: (~~~)
