  • What You Will Do

    The Gas Transfer Systems group is seeking an Engineering Technologist 3 to join our collaborative and dynamic team. The ideal candidate will be highly-organized, self-motivated, and a proficient multi-tasker with a strong desire and capacity to learn and work across disciplines. This role will directly support the prototyping, design definition, and legacy drawing updates for advanced gas transfer systems to support the nuclear weapons enterprise.

    The Gas Transfer Systems group (Q-7) is the design authority for GTS. The team has a prominent role in the laboratory's stockpile stewardship mission. GTS provides engineering and technical expertise to develop and deploy innovative gas transfer systems technology to the nation's nuclear deterrent. Q-7 is composed of engineers, technologists, and technicians, all of whom engage in interdisciplinary, high-performance teams that span conceptual development to system deployment and mission execution.

    As an Engineering Technologist, you will work on the gas transfer system design definition team. A successful candidate must take technical direction from the GTS chief engineer and work with the design definition team in a timely manner to meet the group's needs.

    This posting is under the Associate Laboratory Directorate for Weapons Engineering (ALDW).

    What You Need

    Minimum Job Requirements:

    Advanced knowledge in defining work scope based on requirements, plans work to meet program schedules, priority assessment, schedule status updating, and managing configuration management for design definition.

    • The ability to manage the execution of several projects at once with changing priorities and excellent attention to detail.

    • Advanced level skills utilizing Creo software including experience with the use of 3D CAD for product definition including solid modeling and parametric drawings.

    • Experience with using Product Data Management (PDM) and/or Product Lifecycle Management (PLM) systems for Computer Aided Design (CAD) data management, engineering configuration management (CM) control, and Product Lifecycle Management (PLM), preferably PDMLink.

    • Expert level understanding of ASME Y14.5 (Dimensioning and Tolerancing).

    • Fundamental understanding of:

    • Understanding of the fundamentals of component and tool design, fixturing, schematics, and tooling equipment

    • Machine shop equipment like a mill, lathe, drill press, welder and inspection equipment

    • Engineering materials and their suitability for component design and manufacture

    • High-level, three-dimensional parametric CAD systems and associated Product Data Management system

    • Modeling and drawing drafting principals, application of standards, symbols, notes, GD&T on drawings and models to capture design intent

    • Novel design solutions for unique and non-standard design challenges in either static or dynamic applications

    • The application of design limits in non- routine environments

    Education/Experience :

    Position requires a Bachelor' Degree in Engineering, Engineering Technology Science, Math or related degree from an accredited institution and 8 years of directly related experience; or, an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation.

    Desired Qualifications:

    • Experience reverse engineering as-built designs to create a product definition for future use.

    • The ability to effectively mentor early career designers on skills of the trade and good practices.

    • Significant knowledge and experience in using systematic approaches to problem solving.

    • Highly proficient using CREO Paramatric for product definion.

    • Excellent interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills and demonstrated ability to interact with all levels of personnel and customers; strong teaming skills.

    • Strong communication and collaborative skills with knowledge of computer aided design, geometric dimensioning and tolerancing, and LANL configuration management.

    • Active Q Clearance

    Work Environment:

    Work Location: The work location for this position is onsite and located in Los Alamos, NM. All work locations are at the discretion of management.

    Position commitment: Regular appointment employees are required to serve a period of continuous service in their current position in order to be eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory.     Additional Details

    Directive 206.2 - Employment with Triad requires a favorable decision by NNSA indicating employee is suitable under NNSA Supplemental Directive 206.2 (~~~) . Please note that this requirement applies only to citizens of the United States. Foreign nationals are subject to a similar requirement under DOE Order 142.3A.

    Clearance: Q (Position will be cleared to this level). Selected applicants will be subject to a background investigation conducted by or on behalf of the Federal Government, and must meet eligibility requirements* for access to classified matter. This position requires a Q clearance. and obtaining such clearance requires US Citizenship except in extremely rare circumstances. Dependent upon the position, additional authorization to access classified information may be required, which may or may not be available to dual citizens. Receipt of a Q clearance and additional access authorization ultimately is a decision of the Federal Government and not of Triad.

    *Eligibility requirements: To obtain a clearance, an individual must be at least 18 years of age; U.S. citizenship is required except in very limited circumstances. See DOE Order 472.2 (~~~) for additional information.

    New-Employment Drug Test: The Laboratory requires successful applicants to complete a new-employment drug test and maintains a substance abuse policy that includes random drug testing. Although New Mexico and other states have legalized the use of marijuana, use and possession of marijuana remain illegal under federal law. A positive drug test for marijuana will result in termination of employment, even if the use was pre-offer.

    Regular position: Term status Laboratory employees applying for regular-status positions are converted to regular status.
