Long Island based Zebra technologies campus is looking for an experienced optical engineer to join our highly motivated and innovative Optical Engineering group that authored best-in-class bar-code scanners, laser- and imaging-based, and currently spearheading fast expansion of Zebra business into novel asset intelligence applications. The OE group has highest patent contributions to the company, participates in all phases of optical development, from concept definition to mass-production introduction.
Activities: Designs, develops, builds and tests systems and products based on optic, photonic and laser technologies. Interacts with device, hardware and software design teams to assist in overall development of optical systems; specifying, selecting and qualifying an active and passive optical components, developing and benchmarking system performance models, developing and implementing test procedures and/or evaluating and selecting appropriate test instrumentation.
Architects, designs, and supports developing, and testing of optical design solutions to several highly-complex technical projects. Creates specifications for the projects. Leads technology roadmap process. Recommends project approach and goals.
Champions new thinking and creativity in team members to cultivate and retain top talent. Coaches others on how to effectively develop, communicate, and implement new solutions.
Prioritizes quality and seeks out improvements in all aspects of optical projects.
Maintains keen awareness of competitor products and development direction to help direct designs to surpass the competition.
Uses status as a developer of novel and creative solutions to build business and bring positive attention to technologies and services.
With other engineering disciplines, develops next generation ideas and solutions to meet client needs before the competition.
Analyzes competitor intellectual property and participates in activities related to protecting intellectual property.
Exercises independent judgment in methods, techniques and evaluation criteria for obtaining results.
May supervise the activities of others.
Creates formal networks involving coordination among groups.
Serves as organization spokesperson on specialized projects or programs.
Acts as prime consultant on large projects that affect the organization's long-term goals and objectives
Candidate needs to demonstrate solid knowledge of optical science and mass-production engineering as well as good understanding of electro-optical and opto-mechanical systems, especially imaging, illumination, and pattern generation, analytical thinking, successful completion of challenging optical projects, great communication skills and teamwork, proficiency with SW tools and lab equipment. Significant expeoenice in developing industrial camera or image lens technology.
Required Education: PhD or Masters in an appropriate engineering discipline required.
Required Work Experience (years): Masters degree and 9+ years experience or PhD degree and 6+ years experience
