  • Job Description Summary

    The Lead Proactive Product Safety Engineer "Safety by Design" will be responsible for leading design safety continuous improvement and ensuring potential personnel and environmental hazards are mitigated. This involvement is throughout the entire product life cycle, including conducting reviews as part of the design process and tracking resolution of field issues.

    The Safety by Design Product Safety Engineer will be partnering with other functions to ensure GE provides state of the art design solutions to meet safety standards and to solve field issues jeopardizing safety conditions in a robust and efficient manner.

    The Safety by Design Product Safety Engineer will be also responsible for proactive product safety processes, executing design NPI / NTI risk assessment (PHA/HAZOP/ ASR) and wind siting ASRs (Accident Scenario Review). The Proactive PSE will drive a culture of safety with a high level of accountability and compliance in the engineering team, participating throughout the complete NPI process to analyze and influence safety design considerations to meet applicable onshore wind turbine design requirements.

    Roles and Responsibilities

    In this role your primary responsibility will be to lead the "Safety by Design" project . This includes:

    • Following up retrofits processes of the existing fleet based and proposing Design Practices update to provide safety requirements into the NPI process for future turbine design.

    • Partnering with a team of design engineers in identifying safety design challenges and improvement opportunities in existing onshore wind turbine designs.

    • Lead Touch the Turbine program to Build capability in ONW Engineering, enhancing engineers' field and safety knowledge.

    • Managing deliverables and budget of the project.

    In addition, you will be an integral part of the Onshore Wind Safety Systems team where you will:

    • Lead Product Safety Risk Assessments of onshore wind turbine and related products with the support of Engineering, for new products. Run brainstorming sessions within the engineering team to develop safety concepts of new product.

    • Perform risk assessments of safety critical systems and components (PHA and HAZOP). Ensure all aspects of product safety are addressed within the constraints of operational effectiveness, time, and cost throughout the product life cycle.

    • Assess all Design Change proposals from safety perspective and participate in New Product Introduction design reviews (PDR/CDR/ DDR/ DVR) with Chief Engineers & design teams.

    • Provide thorough documentation of risk analysis (causes, controls, consequences, scoring, etc...) assumptions, team meetings and program status in SAFER data base.

    • Work with cross functional teams (i.e., EHS, engineering, projects, services, et.) to identify potential EHS and product safety risk, document details and provide executive summary (the residual product safety risk summary) to business development.

    • Ensure all pro-active and reactive design learning feeds back into lessons learned for design integration.

    Required Qualifications

    • Technical bachelor's or higher degree from an accredited university / college

    • Minimum 2 years of experience in Product Safety (performing engineering hazard / risk analysis) or in Wind turbine design in one of the following 4 areas:

    • electrical wind turbine components

    • nacelle / drive train

    • structural stability / tower

    • blade / composites

    • system design

    • EU or US Work Permit

    Desired Characteristics

    • Safety-oriented mindset - ability to prioritize "S" over "QDC"

    • Superior cross-functional project management leadership skills

    • Result-oriented mindset -- needs to see SAFER cases through to actual closure of issue

    • Ability to multi-task i.e. to work on several SAFER Cases in parallel

    • Previous experience with resolving Safety issues, e.g. SAFER Case participation

    • Communication and influencing skills

    • Knowledge of Design safety legislation and implementation

    • Team player, leadership, and ability to self-direct

    • Diligent record keeping, acute attention to detail
