Our cultural resources team includes experts in architectural history, history, archaeology, GIS, data management, environmental regulations, and planning.

    ICF is currently seeking a Senior Architectural Historian to work in a dynamic, fast-paced environment on complex environmental compliance projects. This position will be based out of our San Francisco, CA or Sacramento, CA offices and the candidate will work closely with senior- and mid-level ICF professional staff.

    Job Description

    The Senior Architectural Historian will work under the supervision of our cultural resources team leads and job duties will focus on support for CEQA, NEPA, and Section 106 compliance for cultural resource projects in the San Francisco Bay and Sacramento regions. Historic Preservation responsibilities, with direction from senior staff, will include historical research for context statements and property histories; conduct historic resources surveys; compose historical contexts; evaluate properties for National and California Register eligibility; and analyze project impacts/effects. Project coordination responsibilities may include organizing stakeholder outreach correspondence; preparing project team meeting notes; developing and maintaining project staffing trackers; project deliverable coordination; and related project intake and coordination tasks. The candidate may also assist with the preparation of proposals, communication with clients, and tracking project budgets and schedules. This position provides a basis from which to grow a career at ICF in accordance with the candidate's strengths and career interests, including historic preservation planning, regulatory compliance, and/or project management.

    Key Responsibilities

    • Evaluate resources for the National Register of Historic Places/California Register of Historical Resources, write historic contexts, develop resource management recommendations, assess project effects on resources, and provide high-level support to address complex management challenges that require advanced technical or regulatory knowledge.

    • Provide technical leadership in architectural history, including technical approach development, task delegation, and QA/QC for technical reports or documents prepared by junior staff.

    • Manage projects related to environmental compliance and cultural resource management, including client contact, task order management, budget control, invoicing, schedule, personnel allocation/planning, and subcontractor involvement.

    • Collaborate in integrated teams with a diverse group of cultural resources experts, engineers, scientists, planners, regulators, and other stakeholders.

    • Integrate with clients to achieve long-term objectives and efficiencies, from programmatic strategies and feasibility studies through implementation, operations, and maintenance.

    Basic Qualifications

    • Master's degree in Architectural History, Historic Preservation, or related field.

    • 6+ years of professional experience in cultural resources management.

    Preferred Skills/Experience

    • Advanced knowledge of CEQA, NEPA, and Section 106 regulatory requirements.

    • Experience working with private and public sector clients, and regulatory agencies.

    • Familiarity with the history and architectural history of California, Washington, and Oregon; knowledge of other regions of the United States is a plus.

    • Leadership and mentoring skills to foster a growth mindset and contribute to a progressive work environment for employee development and career fulfillment.

    • Experience working with diverse community stakeholders and groups.

    • Demonstrable research and technical writing abilities, especially with the ability to present clear, precise, and authoritative arguments. Writing samples may be requested.

    • Excellent organizational skills and the ability to manage and track data, project deliverables, and schedules.

    • Strong MS Office skills (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Access, and Project)

    Pay Range - There are multiple factors that are considered in determining final pay for a position, including, but not limited to, relevant work experience, skills, certifications and competencies that align to the specified role, geographic location, education and certifications as well as contract provisions regarding labor categories that are specific to the position. The pay range for this position is:

    $79,643.00 - $135,392.00
