    The Business and Information Services (BIS) Division enables the work of the programmatic and operations staff at Argonne National Laboratory by providing effective, integrated, and secure information technology infrastructure and services. BIS provides business systems, collaboration and communication, customer support, infrastructure and operations services, network communications, telecommunications, and cyber security services for the Laboratory.

    The Enterprise Networking Infrastructure group in BIS manages a broad set of communication technologies across the laboratory, including wide-area networking, wireless networking, voice-over-IP (VoIP), firewalls, virtual private networks (VPNs), etc. We work closely with other departments within BIS, in order to provide a wide variety of networking services for the Laboratory, both for research and production.

    We are seeking an experienced Sr. Network Engineer to join the team. The ideal candidate will have experience in the strategy, design, and implementation of networking services and related technologies. Key areas of focus include scripting, automation, standardization, and managing contractor partners and statements of work. The person will ultimately be expected to provide strategic guidance across several networking technology stacks.

    Strong debugging and analysis skills are expected to be utilized in a complex, campus-wide networking environment. Strong command-line interface skills combined with familiarity of commercial enterprise networking products are expected (SolarWinds, etc.).

    Skills and responsibilities include:

    • Multi-vendor computer networking hardware and software installation, operation, troubleshooting and maintenance (including, but not limited to, Cisco, Juniper and, Aruba)
    • Proficiency with the configuration, troubleshooting, proper operation and best practices of Layer 2 protocols (i.e. Spanning-tree, 802.3ad Link Aggregation, 802.1q Trunking, LLDP/CDP, etc), Layer 3 protocols (ARP, VRRP/HSRP, OSPF, OSPFv3, BGPv4), and security protocols (IPsec and SSL with respect to VPN)
    • Ability to troubleshoot using packet capture, data analysis and other common means and to suggest and/or implement configuration changes to correct issues and maximize performance
    • Operational procedures and best practices for managing and monitoring network infrastructure in enterprise environments, specifically those of campus-style implementations.
    • Project management tools used for scheduling, scope, personnel and budget tracking
    • Follow industry and laboratory standards for cabling, infrastructure design and installation; ability to validate proper installation using test-sets and visual inspection
    • Excellent verbal, written, presentation and interpersonal communication skills, including the ability to interact with individuals at all levels within the organization.
    • High-level programming and/or scripting languages for task automation using Unix or Windows systems and management tools
    • Familiarity with Unix and Windows systems and common tools used for the management and monitoring of network communication systems (including, but not limited to SolarWinds, Nagios, Cacti, RANCID, Cisco ISE, etc.)
    • Integration and troubleshooting of non-traditional data communication systems (i.e. SCADA, Metasys, IoT, etc.) into Laboratory infrastructure
    • Understanding of ITIL best practices, including change management
    • To perform the essential functions of this position successful applicants must provide proof of U.S. citizenship, which is required to comply with federal regulations and contract.

    This position can be hired as a Network Engineer or Sr. Network Engineer, and the requirements for each are below:

    Network Engineer (PT3): Bachelor's Degree + 4 years of experience or a Master's Degree + 2 years of experience, or equivalent

    Sr. Network Engineer (PT4): Bachelor's Degree + 6 years of experience or equivalent or a Master's Degree + 4 years of experience, or equivalent
