    Position Overview

    The Senior Systems Engineer is a critical position that supports a long-term initiative to expand a supply-chain / logistics suite of systems to support a new US Veteran Administration global user community. It expands system functionality and data integration with other supply-chain, financial, asset visibility, and medical systems in a rapidly modernizing technology environment. You will be responsible for identifying data requirements, data migration / conversion needs, interface data mapping, performing data validation, and assisting with data clean-up. The technology environment includes MongoDB, ElasticSearch, PostgreSQL, JBoss, Nginx and Greenplum.

    Responsibilities Include:

    • Provide innovative auditable solutions using multi-tier architecture, with SAP Integration and leveraging authoritative data sources

    • Work with the Government and Contract System Engineering team to stand up cloud hosting, as such a cloud hosting certification is desired

    • Work with our business analysts, developers, and data analysts/architects to help deploy an enterprise business system to a new customer environment replacing their legacy systems

    • Provides expertise in key components with an emphasis on database components including PostgreSQL, MongoDB, Elasticsearch, and Greenplum

    • Elasticsearch development efforts to include index mappings, index settings, tuning, scalability, high availability, cybersecurity, architecture and design, and query development

    • MongoDB development efforts including cybersecurity, clustering, high availability, query and engine tuning, and architecture and design

    • PostgreSQL development efforts including cybersecurity, clustering, high availability, query and engine tuning, and architecture and design

    • Kafka setup and development efforts including scaling, consumer groups, KSQL, etc.


    • Must be a US citizen without dual citizenship and able to pass a background investigation to obtain Public Trust suitability (Tier 3)

    • Ability to perform detailed analysis of information requirements and to assist users and other stakeholders to identify and clarify data definitions and business rules

    • Strong understanding of the use and maintenance of data dictionaries, data models, and data maps in an enterprise business software environment

    • Experience with writing technical specifications, interface specifications, design documents, and other technical documents at a high level of accuracy and quality

    • Must be proficient with analyzing business data and inquiring of subject matter experts to identify data meaning, syntax, and business rules to map to a target system

    • Experience with RedHat Linux and/or CentOS 6 or higher, including writing bash scripts

    • BS in computer science, information systems, or similar IT degree

    Desired Skills/Experience:

    • Experience performing data analysis to migrate data from a legacy system to a target system

    • Greenplum development efforts including cybersecurity, clustering, high availability, query and engine tuning, and architecture and design

    • Nginx architecture and configuration development

    • Logstash development efforts including scaling, fault tolerance, high availability, Grok pattern development and libraries, architecture and design, and multiple filter/outputs

    • Experience extracting data from diverse databases and file structures (e.g., JSON, XML, CSV, TXT) to leverage in a different target system (aka ETL/ELT)

    • Python programming with Spark, Pandas, Cerberus, and other data wrangling frameworks.

    • Experience with using both Parquet and ORC file formats

    • Experience with systems and data in Department of Defense (DoD), Veterans Affairs (VA), Logistics, Supply-Chain Management, Medical, Facilities Management, Equipment Management, or Financial Management
