  • The eBERlight group at the X-ray Science Division (XSD) of the Advanced Photon Source (APS) at Argonne National Laboratory (ANL) is currently seeking a software developer/data scientist to support the biological and environmental research activities. The focus of this role will be to participate in the development of software tools for synchrotron beamline operations, data collection, data processing and integration of the data across multiple modalities, such as X-ray crystallography, X-ray computed tomography, X-ray fluorescence microscopy and ptychography.

    Responsibilities include

    • Supporting beamline operations (specific tasks may include robotics development, Graphical User Interfaces (GUIs) design)

    • Assistance with X-ray data (eg. general data management, multimodal data integration tools, user support in data management and processing)

    Position Requirements

    Required Qualifications

    • Proficiency in multiple programming languages such as in Python, C, C++, Java, etc.

    • Experience with motion controls

    • Knowledge of Linux operating system and ability to work effectively within it

    • Strong analytical skills and a proven ability to solve complex problems

    • Ability to work collaboratively within a diverse team environment

    • Capacity to provide project leadership for software development projects

    Preferred Qualifications

    • Knowledge of at least one of the following techniques: macromolecular crystallography, x-ray computed tomography, x-ray fluorescence microscopy, ptychography

    Desired Qualifications

    • Knowledge/experience with machine learning/AI to apply these technologies to eBERlight goals

    • Ability to utilize and knowledge of databases and Laboratory Information Management Systems (LIMS)

    • Knowledge in the fields of biological and environmental sciences to enhance effectiveness in software development for these domains

    Education and Experience Requirements

    • RD2: Bachelor's Degree and 5+ years of experience, Master's Degree and 3+ years experience, a Doctorate, or equivalent.

    • RD3: Bachelor's Degree and 8+ years of experience, Master's Degree and 5+ years experience, a Doctorate and 4+ years experience, or equivalent.
