Our microfactory and maker space on the University of Louisville campus in Louisville, KY boasts state-of-the-art equipment and tools to transform products from prototype to production, including Shopbot, waterjet, laser cutters, press brakes, CNC machines, 3D printers, electronics prototyping, and more. We seek a passionate software engineer to join our team and help bring new products to life!

    As a Software Engineer at FirstBuild, you will utilize your software development expertise to guide products from prototype to production, automate and enhance FirstBuild processes, and help us navigate the ever-evolving software landscape.     How You'll Create Possibilities

    Responsibilities

    • Collaborate with a team of engineers to uncover new product ideas for passionate communities using FirstBuild's proven process.

    • Prototype and refine promising product ideas based on community feedback from social tools like YouTube, Instagram, and Facebook. This co-creation process ensures we create products that users want and love!

    • For product ideas approved for launch, take the lead on all aspects of software execution, including specifications, scheduling, design, development, testing, maintenance, and more.

    • Employ popular tools like GitHub, VSCode, Platformio, Arduino, Raspberry Pi, and others to manage, develop, and prototype software/firmware.

    • Mentor co-ops and junior engineers in software design and execution.

    • Create specifications and documentation to support new product development.

    • Steer software execution through all product development phases, ensuring adherence to timelines.

    • Develop patents for new technologies arising from new product development.

    • Identify and support efforts to automate (AI, scripting, etc.) processes around FirstBuild to streamline our operations.

    • Stay abreast of the latest trends and technologies in the software, firmware, and electronics space to foster growth and innovation in these areas.

    What You'll Bring to Our Team

    • Bachelor's degree in engineering from an accredited university or college.

    • Minimum of 5 years of software/firmware engineering experience, with significant hands-on maker experience.

    • Experience developing software for microcontrollers and interfacing with a wide range of sensors, displays, etc.

    • Arduino/Raspberry Pi or other software/electronics prototyping experience.

    • Strong project management and analytical/problem-solving skills.

    • Proven ability to execute software development for new product introductions, including implementing creative solutions and influencing others as challenges arise.

    • Excellent verbal and written communication and interpersonal skills.

    • Some supplier travel may be required, depending on the project, but this is rare.

    Desired Characteristics

    • Advanced engineering degree

    • Experience with Artificial Intelligence, Machine Learning, and various tools and frameworks.

    • Familiarity with cloud platforms and the ability to use them for rapid prototyping.

    • Experience with mobile app prototyping/development.

    • Experience using 3D CAD software for designing and evaluating physical parts.

    • Comfortable appearing on camera and in social media content.

    • Curious, hands-on, continuous learner
