    Substation Physical Designer

    Job Summary

    POWER Engineers is currently seeking a Substation Physical Designer in the Power Delivery Substation Department in our Columbus office located in New Albany, Ohio. Flexibility is available for a hybrid work environment (employee will need to live within driving distance of the office).

    Roles and Responsibilities

    • The position includes working within a team to complete complex and technically challenging aspects of electrical utility substation design and understanding and adhering to client standards.

    • Perform the detailed Physical design of medium to extra high voltage utility substations. Typical designs include but are not limited to:

    • One-line diagrams

    • Physical layouts

    • Substation general arrangement plans, sections, and elevations

    • Substation equipment selection

    • Foundation plans and details

    • Control building design and details

    • Cable and conduit plans and details

    • Ground grid design and details

    • Lightning protection design and details

    • Yard lighting design and details

    • Material lists

    • AC and DC systems calculations and sizing

    • Work with engineers to develop drawing packages

    • Coordinate designs with other disciplines such as Substation Protection & Control, Structural, and Civil

    • Participate in quality assurance and quality control programs

    • Contribute to engineering project scheduling and budget management

    Required Education/Experience

    • Ability to function as a Substation Physical Designer in our Columbus office located in New Albany, Ohio.

    • Associate degree or equivalent technical education

    • Experience with AutoCAD or MicroStation; experience with both is preferred

    • Understanding of electric utility substation design

    • Electrical and mechanical reasoning skills and attention to detail

    • Good command of the Microsoft Office Suite, with an emphasis on Outlook, Excel, One Note, and Word.

    • The candidate must have strong command of the English language with good written and oral communication skills in order to work effectively with internal team members and external client personnel

    • Candidate must be legally authorized to work permanently in the U.S. without the need for work sponsorship

    Desired Education/Experience

    • Three (3) or more years of experience in electric utility substation design is preferred

    • Familiarity with Autodesk Inventor (preferred) or other parametric modeling software

    • Familiarity with Raster Design and/or Bentley Descartes

    • Ability to produce applicable drawings from rough sketches, notes, client examples, vendor drawings, and such.

    • Ability to select materials based on technical requirements
