  • JOB SUMMARY

    APTIM's Waste Minimization Team is looking for a motivated Zero Waste Specialist to support APTIM's local government waste minimization initiatives with a particular focus on the reduction of single use plastics in the City of Los Angeles. The Zero Waste Specialist will play a critical role in community engagement, education, outreach, and business conversion/adoption to reusable foodware. The primary work involves direct outreach to restaurants within four neighborhoods in the City of Los Angeles. The job requires a persuasive, yet empathetic voice that will help convince business to change their practices. Past experience in canvassing is very useful as this job requires extensive cold-calling (via in-person visits). This work is based on relationship building, trust, and helping to build personal connections between businesses and their impact on the environment.

    The candidate will be a part of APTIM's waste minimization team focused on addressing solid waste related issues including zero waste, waste minimization, sustainable materials management, organic waste diversion, circular economy, and lifecycle assessments.

    BASIC DUTIES

    • Support APTIM Project Manager in data collection and business impact analysis (training will be provided).

    • Meet targets for recruiting business participants to switch to reusable foodware on time and with significant results.

    • Participate in meetings to plan, coordinate, and implement the City of Los Angeles Reusable Foodware Program.

    • Foster existing and new partnerships with zero-waste and community-based organizations to further the mission of the program in a collaborative fashion by requesting, hosting, and facilitating meetings with allies.

    • Other duties as assigned by the client(s) or APTIM.

    KEY REQUIREMENTS

    • Bachelor's degree in environmental studies, planning, project management, or a closely related field, from an accredited college or university and four (4) years of environmental programs, services, or policy-related experience, which should include three (3) years of progressively responsible professional-level work in municipal recycling and solid waste management program administration.

    • Experience working with regulatory agencies is highly desired.

    • Fluency in a language in addition to English (preferably Spanish)

    • Experience in the food service industry is a plus

    • Ability to communicate effectively with businesses and the public

    • Must reside within Los Angeles or Orange County, in driving distance to the project neighborhoods.

    • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment

    • Must be organized, detail-oriented, able to work independently, meat deadlines, and complete assignments while juggling many tasks.

    • Commitment to working both in teams and independently to advance common goals, think creatively, collaborate with others to resolve issues, and create high-quality work products.

    • Strong verbal and written communication

    • Comfort working with technology, including tablets and computers
